In today's times, the inability to conform can lead to isolation or, worse, prejudice. Often, being different is viewed as something to be ashamed for. However, one student from Northwestern Visayan Colleges defied this notion. She fearlessly embraced her uniqueness, which ultimately led her to success.

Sharmaine Rose Acosta Reposar is a first-year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration student who recently competed in the Muay Thai National Championships held from November 24-29, 2025, where she won a silver medal.

According to Sharmaine, it was her first-ever national game. She started training in martial arts, specifically kickboxing and Muay Thai, way back year 2022 when she was only 15 years old. At first, she just wanted to try something new, but as she continued training, she realized how much she enjoyed the sport.

Eventually, she developed a connection to the sport and later fell in love with it, thanks to her partner, who was also her trainer. He's the one who inspired Sharmaine to train consistently and pushed her to join competitions.

"He saw potential in me even before I saw it in myself. From the very beginning, he supported my interest, guiding me, motivating me, and believing that I could do well in this sport," she said.

Kickboxing and Muay Thai are kinds of sports that not everybody is familiar with or even wants to try. It challenges both your body and mind with every kick and punch you make. But for Sharmaine, it's not about the sport itself, it's the passion she has within.

Despite experiencing criticism from other people, she continued to play, nurturing the love she had for her chosen sport and burning the passion within her turning those criticisms into motivation.

With the support of her family, friends, coaches, and teammates, she found the strength to balance everything and the motivation to give her best everytime she steps into the ring.

"Knowing that they trust and support me inspires me to keep pushing forward, no matter what challenges come my way," Sharmaine mentioned.

From her win as a silver medalist, Sharmaine learned a very valuable lesson to have the heart and courage to accept defeat and to do better the next time. Although she won her first fight and got the silver, but wasn't the gold. For her, that's the game she either win or learn.

Sharmaine advised, "Do not doubt yourself. Step out of your comfort zone and be fearless in taking risks. Believe in your potential and trust yourself because you know within yourself that you have what it takes to achieve greatness."

Truly, Sharmaine Rose Acosta Reposar is one of the proud NVCians who didn't let anyone, not even herself, stop her from achieving more. She acknowledged her passion and embraced her uniqueness. She stood tall, brave, and strong fearless to be different from the rest.
