“Humanitarianism Is Not Neutrality”

On August 19, the world marks the World Humanitarian Day. This year’s theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities,” should be a call to action, yet, solidarity means nothing if the world stays silent as humanitarian crises worsen, most brutally in in Gaza, where aid is blocked, hospitals are bombed into rubbles, and children starve to death while the world turns their backs against and debates “neutrality.”

Humanitarianism is not charity, and it is most definitely not neutrality. To remain neutral in the face of genocide is to side with the oppressor. True solidarity is to stand with the displaced, the starving, the silenced, and the brutally oppressed even when it is politically inconvenient.

Everywhere around the globe, from Sudan to Gaza to Congo, humanitarian workers risk their lives while world leaders arm oppressors and issue hollow and hypocritical statements. Honoring humanitarians means more than hashtags and congratulatory social media posts—it means dismantling the systems that profit from war, displacement, and suffering.

If World Humanitarian Day is to matter at this very moment, it cannot be about platitudes. It is a beckoning for the refusal to accept selective outrage and weaponized silence. To be humanitarian today is to resist.
